Sherwani Styles & Shapes Part-1

Achkan / Doublet

What makes an Achkan different from other styles of Sherwani is its lighter fabric. Finer fabrics make Achkan a wonderful attire to be worn during the summer season. It is light weight and makes you feel uber cool in summer heat.

Generally, an Achkan is without lining, has long sleeves and has a coat-like appearance.

The knee-length Achkan can been seen in abundance in all the major sherwani showrooms across the country and the world. However, Chikan is the original fabric to be used in the preparation of this Sherwani.
Besides chikan fabric, the Achkan is also available in a wide range of fabric including linen, jamawar, Tussore silk and many other cotton materials. It is due to the use of these fine fabrics that the Achkan provides maximum comfort even in summer heat
The embroidery work on an Achkan also comes in a wide variety. In fact the Embroidery work on this Sherwani depends on the fabric used to prepare the Achkan. Therefore, with the variations in fabric, the embroidery work may also vary. For example, if you choose chikan fabric for this Sherwani, the embroidery work will only include Swarovski work, crystal work, stone work and French node work. With other types of fabric, the embroidery can include jardozi work, crystal work, bead work, stone work, Swarovski work and almost all types and categories of handwork.
To enhance the overall look and appeal, the Achkan is worn with a pair of Punjabi jutis and turban. Even the turban features eye-catching design patterns. Mainly the turban features handwork of dabka, stone and bead work.
At Sherwanistore.com, you can look forward to getting a wide range of colours as well as fabrics while you choose to dress yourself in a close fitting Achkan. For design patterns, you can make a choice from a variety of handwork. Right from light and medium to heavy, you can have the embroidery work done on the Achkan as you want. We will customise the Achkan in accordance with your needs and individual preferences to match your comfort level.

The turban is a headdress consisting of a long scarf-like single piece of cloth wound round the head or an inner hat. In Hindi, a turban is called a pagri or safa. The word "turban" is a common umbrella term used in English to refer to any sort of head wrap regardless of region or culture. The long strip of cloth was soaked in water at a well, and then wrapped around the head. The layers of wet cloth kept wet all day in the hot dry air.

Contemporary turbans or safa come in many shapes, sizes, and colors.
Middle Eastern, Central Asian, South Asian, and Sikh turban wearers usually wind their turban anew for each wearing, using long strips of cloth. The cloth is usually five meters or less. However, some elaborate South Asian turbans may be permanently formed and sewn to a foundation. Turbans can be very large or quite modest dependent upon region, culture, and religion.

Turbans are worn as women's hats in Western countries. They are usually sewn to a foundation, so that they can be donned or removed easily. Now that fewer Western women wear hats they are less common. However, turbans are still worn by female cancer patients who have lost their hair to chemotherapy and wish to cover their heads. Some women use wigs; others prefer scarves and turbans. Women of the West Indies often cover their heads with intricately tied scarves which may be called scarves, head wraps, or turbans. In Western countries such as the United States, Canada, Europe, etc., men seen wearing turbans in public are likely to be Sikhs, who wear turbans to cover the long uncut hair worn as a sign of their commitment to the Sikh faith.

The turban is closely associated with the Sikh faith. Those who undergo initiation, Khande di Pahul (a type of baptism), to join the Khalsa are forbidden to cut their hair as well as non-baptised Sikhs. Such men are required to wear a turban to manage their long hair. Mostly baptised women also wear turban however non-baptised sikh women usually do not wear turban. Un-initiated Sikhs are still required to leave their hair unshorn. The vast majority of people who wear turbans in Western countries are Sikhs. In India, a turban is commonly called pagri. Sikhs often call it dastar, a more respectful Punjabi word for 'turban'.

Forever Accessories Required for Wearing Anytype of Sherwani Part-2

2. Turbans

Coloured and patterned turbans are a part and parcel of a man's clothing in Rajasthan. The length and style of a turban varies from community to community. This can be easily understood by the fact that a pagari measures 52 feet in length and 9 inches in width while a safa is 30 feet long and 4 feet wide, All over Rajasthan.

A Turban is considered to be symbol of pride and it signifies gallantry. If someone publicly appears without a turban in Rajasthan, it is seen as grossly inconvenient and immoral. Other local terms used to refer to a turban include pencha or sela, apart from pagari and safa. It's the size and style of the turban that puts them in a particular category and makes them distinct from one another.

Traditionally, turbans or safas are worn in northern India on wedding occasions. However, turbans have come into fashion widely across India and the world. As per Indian tradition and culture, it is of utmost importance to wear a turban on the groom's wedding day. To make these turbans more attention grabbing, kalgi (a small brooch) and feathers are also attached to the front of the safa.

According to modern style, turbans for wedding and other traditional celebrations can be of the following types.

Rajasthani Turban:

Jodhpuri turban or Rajasthani Safa are equally popular both with locals and foreigners. These Multicoloured Turbans are quite in demand by tourists coming to India. Decorated with embroidery patterns, the Rajasthani turban is just the right option to be worn with Sherwanis and Jodhpuri suits.

Bambaiya Turban:
These turban styles belong to the western India, specifically to the state of Maharashtra. When the Bambaiya turban is worn on the head along with the elegant kalgi and feathers, it highly enhances the look and appearance.

Afghani Turban:
In the Muslim community, it is termed as 'safa', usually shorter but broader than a pagari. These turbans are available both in plain form and embroidered form.

To suit an individual's purpose and taste, a turban can either be light in weight or heavier. Handwork including zari work from silver and gold thread is done to create elegant embroidery patterns on the turban.

To make turbans more ornate, beads, pearls, precious and semi precious stones are used. Usually, turbans are made of Ghatchola silk, Chunri cloth (Panchrangi), Tissue cresh, Zari fabric etc.
